Black Sesame Steamed Cupcakes

Was idling in the afternoon and saw this afternoon TV programme where the Chinese Medic was talking about preventing white/grey hairs. Suitable head massage and consumption of black sesame helps in the prevention of the age-wary white hairs.
Without hesitation, I made these black sesame steamed cupcakes and gave myself a dose of these. Hee...hee hope it will really hinder the growth of more white/grey hairs on my head.
For these cupcakes, I used CATALO bottled original flavour black sesame paste bread spread. Surprisingly, the black sesame aroma is so much better than the black sesame powder that I have been using - good recommendation from net friends!

Ingredients:
100g cake flour
1.5 tsp baking powder

2 eggs
pinch of salt
85g sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla essence
2 tbsp corn oil

100ml milk
30g black sesame paste

Method:
1. Put milk and black sesame paste into a microwavable cup and microwave on HIGH for 40 seconds. Stir till all sesame paste is well mixed.
2. Sieve flour and baking powder into a big mixing bowl. Stir in the sugar and salt.
3. Pour in black sesame milk mixture, vanilla essence and 1 egg.
4. Beat the mixture with an electric egg beater and add in the other egg. Beat till well combined. 5. Add in corn oil and beat till mixture is well combined.
6. Spoon batter into muffin pan lined with paper cups and steam on medium high heat for 15 - 20 minutes or till cooked.

This is the black sesame paste that I used.

Wow! Really black.... thought using the roasted sesame seed would be more fragrance. Never tried that, just a thought.

Hi foodcrazee,
Blacker than ink!
Didn't expect it to be that black.
I did tried it with the roasted sesame but the result is not as good as using this paste.

Hi nadia
Baking soda = Bicarbonate de soude in French.
Maybe be you can use AltaVista Babel Fish Translation tool to help you translate English to French. :)

Hi,
Maybe you can make your own black sesame paste as follows:
Wash and dry the black sesame seeds before dry frying till cooked and fragrant. Add a little water to the dry-fried black sesame and blender/grind into paste.

Hi Florence,

This cupcake of yours also tempted me :)

1) Same question as the double chocolate muffins i've posted, will there be a difference in the texture is plain flour is used instead?

2) I don't have the black sesame paste which you have used. Can i use those instant black sesame paste powder (Zhi Ma Hu) instead? If so, how much water should i add to substitute your sesame paste?

Thanks again so much!

P.S. Really very impressed with all your bakings :)

Hi Cheryl,
Thank you!
(1) I used cake flour for finer texture of the cakes.

(2) I think you can use the black sesame powder, just add enough water to make it into a paste.

Happy Baking!

Hi Florence,

I love yr blog. I tried making the black sesame steamed cupcakes this morning using black sesame powder. After microwave the milk and powder, I strain it. I didn't get the nice dome shape like yours. After removing from the steamer, it shrink. Taste wise very nice and spongy.
